Summer holidays have ended and it’s time to come back to reality. For many of you this is your first year at university. Starting university can be terrifying, but just by taking a look at the UQ Economics Society (UQES) blog, you’ve already taken the first step towards making this one of the best years of your life. This will be the first instalment in our First Year Guide Series, which will be periodically posted on this blog to help guide you through the year.

After reading this blog, your next step (if you haven’t already) is to join the UQES on Market Day this Wednesday. There are so many benefits to joining the UQES, from meeting great people with similar interests to awesome social and career networking events.

UQES events begin with a bang for first years with the first-year dinner – a perfect opportunity to meet some new friends that you’ll see (and steal study notes from) throughout your degree. For those of you lucky enough to be born before May, one of the most anticipated events of the year is the UQES pub crawl. Get your friends together and join other UQES members for a great night of bar hopping, dancing and drinks. Finally, the Econ Ball, an ever-so-slightly classier event than the pub crawl, allows society members to break out their best suits and most beautiful dresses for a great night of dancing, drinking and delicious food.

After leaving school the closest thing most of us ever get to exercise is half jogging to the tute that started 20 minutes ago. Luckily, UQES is here to help with that too. UQES participates in several social sporting competitions with UQ Sport. These are a great opportunity to make some awesome friends, keep fit and have a break from uni. Sports on offer include 7-a-side soccer, touch rugby league, netball and many more. More importantly, we will be fielding a professional First Year Dodgeball team this year. No experience, skill or coordination is required or expected. If you’re interested, fill out this form or contact our Sports Officer, Natalya, at

For something more provocative and ‘intellectually stimulating’ (what a phrase), come along to our Economics Discussion Evening scheduled to be in early April! You will learn about an exciting and topical issue before debating and discussing it with fellow UQES members. This is a fantastic opportunity to mingle with some of the older students for tips and career advice as well.

RedE Card

Ask any society member and they’ll tell you that one of the biggest perks of the UQES is the RedE card. Every society member receives this card when they sign up. This card entitles you, the cardholder and proud UQES member, to a variety of great discounts and deals at some of Brisbane’s best food and clothing retailers as well as free entry to Brisbane’s best bars and clubs. This card also gets you discounts to all the UQES events including the pub crawl and the ball. The RedE Card and UQES ensures that you will not only have a great year, but an affordable one too.

Keep in touch!

Unfortunately, university isn’t all just about having fun. At some point, preferably before day 5 of SWOTVAC, you must start studying. UQES is there to help with that as well. Make sure to join our First Year facebook page for information on study groups and tutor matching. Otherwise, you can meet some of our friendly exec at all of our events, and they would be more than happy to give you a hand.

Remember to sign-up to UQES on Market Day and like our Facebook page for updates on all of these exciting activities throughout the year. We look forward to seeing you at the UQES stall (look for the red balloons) on Market Day and at all the great events we have planned this year!
